Today in our salute to Horror Moms, we salute Morticia Frump Addams. She is the wife of Gomez Addams and mother of three children, Wednesday Addams, Pugsley Addams, and baby Pubert Addams. She first appeared as an unnamed character in New Yorker magazine in cartoons drawn by Charles Addams. According to the official Charles Addams website, the character was described by the cartoonist as “[t]he real head of the family . . . with fierce family loyalty.” Besides her husband Gomez and her children, her other passion is “her garden of deadly nightshade, henbane, and dwarf’s hair.” Photo Credit: Tee & Charles Addams Foundation
When the characters were adapted in 1964 for the television series The Addams Family, the cartoonist named her Morticia, inspired by the term “mortician.” Her maiden name is Frump, although the character was played by the late actress Carolyn Jones (whose horror cred was built on her role in Invasion of the Body Snatchers) who definitely was not! Morticia was costumed in a floor-length black dress that was so form fitting, she was unable to walk in it – Jones stood on a dolly which stagehands moved across the floor. Like her cartoon self, television Morticia loved her garden, and she could often be seen clipping the flowers off long-stemmed roses in order to arrange the thorned stems. You can watch the first season credits and theme song by clicking the picture below.
In 1991, it was time to bring the Addams Family back, this time to the silver screen. The Addams Family served as the screen directing debut of Barry Sonnenfeld, who went on to direct the sequel Addams Family Values, as well as the acclaimed Men in Black trilogy. The film stars the talented and beautiful Anjelica Huston as Morticia, who was nominated for a Golden Globe for her performance. According to her memoir, Huston, who confessed to being “obsessed” with the character of Morticia, was surprised to get the coveted role, which she expected to go to Cher. Her performance was an attempt to highlight Morticia’s warm side, and her utter devotion to her children. Photo Credit: Paramount Pictures / Viacom
In 1993, Huston reprised her role as Morticia in the feature film Addams Family Values. Huston was again nominated for the Golden Globe Award for her performance, but lost to Angela Bassett. You can watch the trailer for the first film in the series by clicking the picture below.
