Your mother probably told you to eat your vegetables. She probably didn’t tell you that your vegetables want to eat you.
In 2008’s The Ruins, four Americans are vacationing in Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula. When they and two new friends explore an off-the-beaten-track location containing ancient Mayan ruins, however, they are warned away by local residents. Ignoring the warnings as mere superstition, they go ahead anyway – and wind up (as all who ignore such warnings do) in a Very Bad Situation.
The ruins are the home of an unnamed species of vine whose favorite food group is people. Give them an opening – a mouth does just fine – and the vines crawl in and eat from the inside out. They also band together to drag the dead into the jungle – who knew carnivorous plants liked atmospheric dining? But the worst thing about them is that they can mimic sounds (like ringing cell phones) and human voices. And they laugh at us.
This film earned its R rating with graphic gore, realistic effects, and wildly unsettling images. Directed by Carter Smith (Jamie Marks Is Dead), the film stars Jonathan Tucker (In the Valley of Elah), Jena Malone (Sucker Punch and Hunger Games), Shawn Ashmore (X-Men), and Laura Ramsey (Cruel World).
