In a publicity stunt worthy of P.T. Barnum himself, Universal Pictures and Blumhouse Productions launched the first teaser for “Purge 4: The First Purge” to coincide with the President Trump’s State of the Union address last night (January 30, 2018). The studios’ propaganda video urged the establishment of the fictional purge as a “new American tradition.”

Regular readers of this website are aware that I am a hyuge fan of “The Purge” franchise. In fact, the very first blog I wrote for the website back in 2014 was an essay looking forward to the release of “Purge 2: Anarchy” and wondering what the film series – based on the idea that it would be a good thing for our country to legalize murder one night a year – says about us as a country.

Apparently, we are about to find out. “The First Purge” will consider the questions that led to the initial establishment of the Purge. The official studio announcement invites us to “witness the rise of our country’s 12 hours of annual lawlessness. Welcome to the movement that began as a simple experiment: The First Purge.”

According to the press release, the Purge began as a simple experiment, without, it would seem, the approval of any human subjects committee. “To push the crime rate below one percent for the rest of the year, the New Founding Fathers of America (NFFA) test[ed] a sociological theory that vent[ed] aggression for one night in one isolated community.” But, unfortunately, the experiment ran head-first into the Law of Unintended Consequences when “the violence of oppressors [met] the rage of the marginalized,” causing the violence to spread across the country.

Directed by Gerard McMurray, “The First Purge” was written by James DeMonaco, the writer/director of the three previous Purge films. The film stars Marisa Tomei, Y’Lan Noel, Lex Scott Davis, Joivan Wade, and Luna Lauren Velez.

If you missed it last night, here is the unsettling teaser for “Purge 4: The First Purge.”
