Lionsgate Films has officially announced that the Power Rangers will be throwing its figurative hat (helmet?) into the already crowded ring that is the movie schedule for summer of 2016. No director has been hired for the film just yet, but currently guiding the ship as Executive Producer and story developer is writer/producer Roberto Orci, known for his involvement in the Transformers franchise, the Star Trek franchise, and “Amazing Spider-Man 2.” The screenplay is being written by Ashley Miller and Zack Stentz, who are best known for their work on comic book movies like “X-Men: First Class” and “Thor.”

While no plot details have been released, Lionsgate has officially described the Power Rangers movie is “a modern reinvention of the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, a group of ordinary high school kids who find themselves infused with extraterrestrial powers and must harness those powers as a team to save the world.”

Update: Orci withdrew from the Power Rangers film to work on Star Trek 3, delaying the film’s release until 2017.
